MulTeWSe - 2D

Our invention has a provisional patent in USA     Together with the Office of Transfer and Innovation of Universidad de Los Andes, we are taking our new materials research into the next stage...     This has monumental space requirements!      ... And monumental energy comsumption :( This situation is not sustainaible in the near future...    The core of the problem is in the heart of memory devices... Let's see how TRADITIONAL RAM MEMORIES work:  MulTeWSe 2D brings simultaneous solutions to both problems! :D   Compared to current solutions in the market: ...

Resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS)

Resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) is an experimental technique that allows to determine the spectrum of mechanical resonances of a certain piece of material. The set of frecuencies of this spectrum is determined by the shape and dimentions of the material, its density and its mechanical properties described by the elastic constants (entries of the elastic tensor). By numerically solving the inverse elastic problem, one can go from the resonance frequencies measured in RUS to the full elastic tensor, a symmetry-specific thermodynamic quantity thar describe the response of a material to...

Quantum criticality

Evidence suggests that the families of superconductors with the highest critical temperatures might exhibit quantum critical points (QCP) under the superconducting dome. A QCP marks the point in a phase diagram of temperature-tuning parameter at which a phase transition in a material is realized at zero temperature. How fluctuations associated with the presence of such QCP affect or even, give rise to the electronic properties of these materials and the superconductivity itself, is one of the most important open questions in materials research. Of particular interest for our group is the...

Low-dimensional chalcogenides

It is well known that dimensional confinement of electrical carriers in materials enhances electronic correlations, leading to exotic properties that cannot be understood by semiclassical models: low dimensionality is ruled by the realm of quantum mechanics. This fact has been widely recognized in two dimensional systems such as graphene, 2D transition metal dichalcogenides, and thin films and heterostructures of a variety of materials. The family of transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) are widely-known low-dimensional materials used in many fields of physics and material science. They...

Single Crystal Growth

We complement our research endeavors with a strong effort on single crystal growth. For this, we commonly use the following techniques: Molten flux method (see a reference to the method in I. R. Fisher et al. (2012)). Physical vapor transport. Electrochemical method. Solid state reaction, as an intermediate step for growing crystals. Here is a sample of the crystals we have grown in our group:
